The vEdge-100, which is showcased this week at the Interop trade show in Las Vegas, is useful to companies with sites that rely on 3G, 4G or LTE cellular connections as a backup Internet connection. Banks also could use the Viptela vEdge router with ATMs, which typically use mobile connections. Organizations with mobile health clinics or food trucks could use the router to connect to the Internet via a carrier.
Businesses that want to add a cellular network as a backup option at a remote location can add the vEdge-100 alongside their current router. A customer can use whatever SIM card is needed to connect to a carrier.
Companies could have any combination of MPLS, broadband, Ethernet, Secure Sockets Layer over Internet, IPsec or a cellular connection to the latest Viptela vEdge router, which has five fixed ports. Companies manage the appliance via a Web portal hosted by Viptela.
"This is a lower-bandwidth device," said Lloyd Noronha, director of global marketing at Viptela, based in San Jose, Calif. "It actually fits better in sites that are smaller."
Configuring vEdge-100 to direct network traffic
Like other SD-WAN appliances, companies configure the vEdge-100 to execute policies that direct applications to the appropriate link depending on their need. For example, voice over IP might go through a highly reliable MPLS connection, while connecting to a corporate site for ordering business cards would use a less expensive broadband connection.
Viptela's other SD-WAN appliances include the vEdge-1000 and vEdge-2000 routers. The vendor designed the larger Viptela vEdge models, which have throughputs of 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps, respectively, for data centers, enterprise campuses and branch offices. Viptela also sells virtual routers.
Companies connect the devices to a central vSmart controller that runs as software on an x86 server and orchestrates connectivity among Viptela vEdge routers. Viptela's vManage software manages and provisions the network and sets policies.
Viptela declined to release pricing for the vEdge-100.
