KDDI Europe picks Silver Peak SD-WAN for managed service

KDDI Europe makes its move in managed SD-WAN, supported by Silver Peak SD-WAN; Lumina Networks updates its Flow Manager product to support service providers transitioning to SDN.

KDDI Europe launched a global managed software-defined WAN service underpinned by Silver Peak SD-WAN technology.

London-based KDDI Europe said it opted for Silver Peak SD-WAN, Unity EdgeConnect, because of its "ability to centrally orchestrate secure internet breakout on an application-by-application basis," according to a joint statement. KDDI Europe also cited features within Silver Peak SD-WAN that included Silver Peak's WAN optimization integration and tiered service delivery options, which the provider said are better suited for the enterprise market.

In addition to KDDI Europe, Silver Peak provides SD-WAN technology to a number of other providers, including China Telecom, Fujitsu, Masergy, NTT Communications and TPx Communications.

KDDI Europe's offering expands the number of countries parent KDDI Corp. already reaches with its SD-Network Platform. The SD-Network Platform, launched last fall, is available in 37 countries and uses SD-WAN technology from Versa Networks.

Lumina updates Flow Manager support for legacy networks

Lumina Networks recently made updates to its Flow Manager to reduce the difficulties most service provider customers face when transitioning to software-defined networks.

Flow Manager, which runs on Lumina's OpenDaylight-based SDN controller, now lets customers combine existing infrastructure components, like MPLS, with white box switching, according to a company statement. For example, customers can combine existing protocols like Border Gateway Protocol and Netconf with OpenFlow and P4.

Lumina said it bolstered support so customers can define virtual LAN, MPLS and segment routing paths to run over white box switches. Additionally, Flow Manager can direct packets traveling over E-Line, E-Tree, Layer 2 and Layer 3 VPN connections. As a result, Lumina said providers can continue to deliver services to customers, while using both their existing networks and the new elements -- all with a single SDN control plane.

Lumina Networks launched last year after acquiring Brocade's SDN controller.

SevOne boosts its Cisco ACI monitoring capabilities

Boston-based network monitoring company SevOne announced this week the addition of 10 new monitoring dashboards to help track Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure-based environments.

The new dashboards, part of SevOne SDN Monitoring Solution 2.0, give customers visibility -- both historic and real time -- into network components, like Application Policy Infrastructure Controller clusters and endpoints, according to a company statement. For example, SevOne can automatically detect new endpoints within the ACI environment, whether virtual or physical, and provide status, metadata visibility and policy requirements.

Customers can use SevOne to automatically monitor software-defined networks, as well as legacy networks, all through the same dashboard. This capability can help enterprises manage the transition from traditional networks to Cisco ACI environments, the company said.
