OpenStack Networking's Layer-3 agent

On his personal blog, solutions architect Jason Edelman looked at the Layer-3 agent in OpenStack Networking, also known as Neutron. Multiple Layer-3 agents are now supported in Neutron. Edelman broke down the need for the gateway to communicate with the outside world and addressed questions focusing on the differences between a Layer-3 gateway and a logical router, what a gateway service is, and whether the Layer-3 agent needs to be on a dedicated network node.

Elephant flow detection and mitigation

Author Greg Ferro summarized a presentation on elephant and mice flows on his Ethereal Mind site. Elephant flows often cause issues in packet networking since they're large data transfers that tend to overflow buffers and queues in the hardware. The premise of the discussion was to detect elephant flows in a software switch and mitigate them using a hardware switch. Ferro outlined issues and observations made, writing that the main goal of the presentation was to highlight the value of integration between virtual overlay and physical underlay networks.

Highlighting SDN and QoS

On the No Jitter website, network engineer Terry Slattery looked at quality of service (QoS) in an SDN. A recent use case published by the UC Interoperability Forum looked at the various ways SDN could improve QoS across an enterprise. One idea was the inclusion of an automated QoS service application, which Slattery took a closer look at. He also broke down QoS policy within an application, QoS policy between applications, QoS within the network core, and complications that were identified within the use case. The dynamic nature of QoS in an SDN environment, he concluded, is going to be a big change in networking, with the end result being more adaptable networks that integrate with applications for the best performance possible.

SDN market set to exceed $20 billion

On the VAR Guy site, author Michael Cusanelli summarized a recent report by Rayno Media that concluded the SDN market is set to generate more than $20 million in value for the IT channel. The report, called The Software Defined Network Revolution: An Ecosystem Report, predicted large-scale events like mergers and IPOs will be some of the driving factors of growth in SDN. The report also found that opportunities in both SDN and network functions virtualization are currently understated and have potential for growth. SDN has yet to fully infiltrate the channel, Cusanelli wrote, since there continues to be a general lack of understanding on SDN's true meaning.
