Editor's note: This NetScout TruView product overview is part of a series on network performance monitoring (NPM). The series also explores the evolution of network monitoring technology, discusses the major use cases, lays out the major purchasing criteria and compares the leading vendors on the market.
NetScout TruView is an all-in-one appliance that performs network monitoring, alerting, and advanced performance monitoring of virtualized data centers, WAN acceleration deployments, and advanced quality of service (QoS) policies. The product helps to unify troubleshooting and monitoring by providing a single platform that can be used by network, storage, application and server administrators. A new component, TruView Live, lets administrators monitor the availability and performance of their public and private cloud deployments.
TruView is an appliance-only platform. It has the ability to be deployed using either a single appliance or in a distributed architecture for improved scalability and performance on larger networks. But no matter how you plan to deploy NetScout TruView, you will rely on a single and easy to use graphical interface to interact with each NPM tool. For all-in-one deployments, you can choose from the TruView 4300 or the TruView 6300 appliance. The larger of the two has more processing power, larger storage and multi-10 gigabit Ethernet interfaces for connecting to the network. Let's break out each NetScout TruView appliance option to understand what each is capable of performing.
In a single-appliance deployment, the TruView appliance can do it all. It can monitor and analyze up to 1 million infrastructure components and applications per minute, collect and analyze up to 20,000 flows per second, perform capacity planning and run various reports from a single device. If your network infrastructure requires more monitoring capacity, then you need to move to a distributed model where the TruView appliance offloads centralized management and NetFlow traffic onto separate appliances. Two models are offered.
For distributed deployments, NetScout TruView Central is the single point of unified management, reporting and performance analysis. All collected data flows back to this appliance for data collection and processing. There is only one model for the TruView Central appliance, one that's engineered with 128 GB of memory and 27 TB of storage capacity.
TruView Flow appliance
The TruView Flow appliance offloads data flow collection and analysis duties from the NetScout TruView appliance and onto this server. Users then connect to the TruView Central appliance to access the analyzed data from the various dashboards and reports available. There are two different appliance models to choose from. The smaller of the two can collect up to 100,000 flows per second, while the high-end model can collect up to 300,000 flows per second.
Pricing and support
Purchasing of the TruView appliances and device monitoring licenses is done through authorized NetScout resellers, which determine final pricing depending upon your requirements. Customers have the ability to purchase a NetScout support and maintenance contract that provides access to a knowledgebase, software updates/patches, phone support, hardware replacement and a hardware loaner program.
