HotSeat video: ACG Research explores Juniper's new PTX MPLS switch

In this video, Ray Mota of ACG Research puts Juniper Networks' Mike Marcellin on the "HotSeat" about Juniper's recently announced PTX Series Packet Transport Switch.

In this ACG Research HotSeat video, Managing Partner Ray Mota digs deep about Juniper's new PTX MPLS-optical supercore switch with Mike Marcellin, vice president of strategy and marketing at Juniper Networks. The new PTX Series IP/MPLS switch is designed to collapse network layers and create a fast Layer 2-switched IP/MPLS core that includes integrated optics or a separate optical shelf. The PTX is scheduled for beta testing in the third quarter of 2011, with an anticipated ship date of the first quarter of 2012, according to Marcellin.

Juniper sees the PTX IP/MPLS switch and "converged supercore" as a muscular, scalable solution for the traffic handling problems that service providers will continue to face as a result of exponential traffic growth. The three primary components of the solution are:

  • The new Junos Express chipset, which Marcellin says has been optimized for high-capacity and MPLS transport;
  • The PTX Series Packet Transport Switch, a newly designed hardware system that enables service providers to collapse network layers and reduce both architectural and operational inefficiencies;
  • The Junos operating system, which powers the packet and optical layers.

Juniper is trumpeting the PTX Series IP/MPLS switch as the next level of industry-leading performance, capacity, speed and architectural advancement. But the question remains: With its combination of an impressive hybrid fabric and long-haul optics, does the PTX Series shift the power base to router vendors in the packet transport area?
