After a multiyear process of integrating CA Technologies with Nimsoft, CA has finally done away with the Nimsoft brand as part of its network performance monitoring (NPM) lineup. But at its core, the Nimsoft application remains, now renamed CA Unified Infrastructure Management (UIM). CA UIM includes standard infrastructure monitoring and alerting capabilities -- with the ability to purchase additional performance, monitoring and troubleshooting tools as needed.
The one tool that brings all monitoring, alerting, troubleshooting and reporting tools together into a single unified dashboard is the UIM product, which runs on a Windows Server OS. In addition to integrating other tools under a unified management platform, CA UIM is a powerful network management tool that can monitor and inventory your entire network using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) polling/trapping, software agents and remote monitoring. If additional NPM capabilities are needed, customers can choose from among one or more of the following products:
CA Application Performance Management (APM) -- Through its ability to monitor complex applications for performance-related issues, CA Application Performance Management helps administrators identify problems at the application layer so they can be resolved before they significantly affect end users.
CA Network Flow Analysis -- By tapping into flow-based data collected throughout the network, CA Network Flow Analysis can highlight data flows from one end of the infrastructure to the other. Ultimately, this capability lets users identify and resolve problems to gain improved network performance.
CA Mainframe Management and Analytics -- The suite of tools that fall under the Mainframe Management and Analytics category aims to help manage, troubleshoot and automate mainframe processes on your infrastructure. The software provides end-to-end visibility to quickly identify areas that may be causing mainframe performance issues.
Pricing and support
CA Technologies offers two primary forms of support: self-service and enhanced. Self-service support includes access to a well-maintained knowledge base, product documentation, security alerts and a download center to access updates/patches. The vendor also manages a community board where customers and engineers can discuss all aspects of CA UIM, from implementation questions to troubleshooting and future product release features.
Enhanced support offers a dedicated resource to act as a centralized point of contact for all support needs. Enhanced support has three different pricing tiers. The primary difference among the three tiers is the amount of time the support staff will spend with your company, as well as the number of on-site visits they will make.
CA Technologies software is purchased through authorized CA partners. The final price for your specific NPM will depend on the products you choose, the number of interfaces and devices that need to be monitored, as well as any discounts that your local CA partner can grant. Please be aware that there are three different ways to license CA software. Depending on the size of your infrastructure and industry vertical, one licensing method will be preferred over the others.
