What are some of the challenges of running a dual-stack IPv6 cloud?

Let's start by assuming that your staff is comfortable managing an IPv6-enabled environment and that the focus is only on managing coexistence.

It's important to remember that when running dual-stack, the two protocols are sharing infrastructure resources. Therefore, take this into consideration when it comes to planning and management. This is true for parts of the environment that are commonly used by all services. After all, customers will use a service over IPv4 or IPv6, but not over both.

When running a dual-stack environment, the topology and service footprint for IPv6 does not necessarily have to mirror those for IPv4. This could mean that different operational procedures -- provisioning, management, troubleshooting -- would apply to both. If you are concerned with managing multiple layers of virtualized resources, note that running a dual-stack cloud will add a layer of complexity to the network layer that the various stacks use to deliver services.
