Supervisory engine in Cisco Catalyst switches

What is the function of the supervisory engine in Cisco Catalyst switches? And, what is the significance of supervisory engine 1,2 and 3?
Supervisor engines (SE?s) are the brains of a Cisco Catalyst switch. SE I and II are powered by a 25 MHz processor. A 150 MHz processor powers SE III. It can provide for over a Gig of throughput and has slots for Flash PC cards.
