According to my telephony guru friends, the SS7 is the most widely-used telephony switch in North America, and it will probably stay that way for some time to come. Thus, your plan to change focus to that platform is likely to be rewarded with future work. My telephony guru friends say that it is also worth investigating combined voice/data switches from companies like Cisco, Nortel, and others, since these are also coming into increasing use in telecommunications providers and in companies and organizations large enough to implement and manage their own communications infrastructures.
