Is linking wireless to the corporate network secure?

I am a junior support engineer and live in South Africa. My question is, can I really trust a wireless network in a large company and link it to connected cables of other departments?
Wireless 802.11 networks really need some attention when used as access technologies into enterprise networks. Several techniques can be used to achieve the goal, but the basic principle behind them is to treat the wireless as a remote access technology. This means stronger access control than is usually found on enterprise networks, either by using a VPN or a specialized wireless access server. (Answered by Dave Juitt)
