There are in fact a lot of software which help you monitor bandwidth. Some are quite easy and some are difficult to get them working but are useful. Bandwidth monitor pro runs on desktop and can give you instant results. "Solar winds" is another good example of ready to run software provided you give it IP address and snmp string. MRTG will need some configuration and scripting but can give you good amount of information.
