Does Cisco's new CRS-3 router offer any improvements in optical traffic grooming?

The short answer is, "No."

In the CRS-3 launch, Cisco introduced a number of new components of their high-end routing platform, including new shelves, new higher-speed forwarding and modular services cards as well as three new physical line interface modules (PLIMs). The new PLIMs are a 100 Gigabit Ethernet card, which is targeted at very high-speed core links, and two high-density 10 Gigabit Ethernet cards, which address the high-speed aggregation needs.

While the new line cards will definitely prove beneficial in very large service provider networks, they do not offer new technologies or solutions; they just give you more aggregate throughput at higher speeds or higher port density.
