Is IPv6 management or implementation affected by whether you're providing Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) or Software as a Service (SaaS)? Does each model have unique requirements for using IPv6?
Any concerns about IPv6 decrease as we move from IaaS to the more abstracted PaaS environments and finally to the most abstracted model of cloud services, SaaS. Though even for IaaS, the industry has not been paying sufficient attention to the requirements and opportunities presented by IPv6. Our recent analysis of IPv6 support in the OpenStack Havana release revealed that not enough attention has been given to IPv6 support. With the accelerating IPv6 adoption, this means that new cloud infrastructures are built in a legacy context from day one.
While these cloud providers can add IPv6 support with temporary and makeshift solutions, their IaaS offerings miss out on the benefits of an IPv6-based cloud: new provisioning options; expanded addressing resources that make it easier for customers to expand, contract and burst their footprint; and traffic management options. If you are deploying IaaS, you must think in IPv6 terms. You must deploy an IPv6-based infrastructure.
