DLSW or STUN (Serial Tunneling)

We are currently running SDLC protocol based host system (an IBM AS400) with users connected via IEN routers. The end-to-end nodes are connected via point-to-point leased line to the host LAN.

However, we want to migrate the existing users to an IP based dial-up via an ATM WAN to save on our existing network cost. Upgrading the host system adapters to TCP/IP based is not an option for us due to cost implications. The only logical path for us is to find a solution that will allow our existing SDLC based host system and users communicate via a Telco's existing IP based ATM WAN. This is a nation wide project. We need to know if there are similar projects that were successfully implemented. We need to know specific hardware and routing software solutions that are available.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone can take an interest in helping me out with this problem.

How are the users currently connected? Are you using 5494/5394 remote workstation controllers and twinax? If you are, then look at replacing them with Perle and BOS controllers, which can use TCP instead of APPN. If the users are using PCs, what host access package are you using? I am not sure what you mean about not upgrading host system adapters. The AS400 LAN adapters support IP along with SNA just fine.

You can look into using DLSW or STUN (Serial Tunneling). DLSW is available from Cisco and most other "edge router" vendors. Each approach has its strengths and weaknesses, and some of the weaknesses can be a killer, depending upon the specifics of your environment and application.

You can look into a company called, "Sync Research", http://www.sync.com. Their focus is on IBM / SNA / SDLC conversion to frame-relay and other WAN protocols.
