Despite significant investments in gateway security, the volume of successful attacks, as marked by the rate of acknowledged security incidents, continues to rise steadily in terms of both volume and impact. Two critical assumptions of gateway security are that the threat from internal sources is negligible and there are no alternate paths via which external threats can gain entrance to the environment.

This paper explores how the "network edge" must change to meet the challenge of enhanced internal security.
