Despite significant investments in gateway security, the volume of successful attacks, as marked by the rate of acknowledged security incidents, continues to rise steadily in terms of both volume and impact. Two critical assumptions of gateway security are that the threat from internal sources is negligible and there are no alternate paths via which external threats can gain entrance to the environment.

This paper explores how the "network edge" must change to meet the challenge of enhanced internal security. There are two major factors driving the increase in network intelligence at the edge: changing business environments that have resulted in demand for more adaptive and secure network solutions and advancements in technology that have enabled network vendors to respond with meaningful solutions.
