SILVER AWARD: Nortel Networks' SSL VPN Module 1000
Taking the Silver Award in our VPN category is the Nortel SSL VPN Module 1000 (formerly the Contivity SSL VPN Module 1000) from Nortel Networks. Enterprises that currently have an IPsec VPN running on Contivity 1740, 2700 and 5000 platforms can implement the module to extend blended IPsec and SSL-based remote access to their users with the same administration and authentication used for the existing IPsec VPN.
SSL VPN on Contivity is a dedicated hardware-based SSL VPN design that provides enterprise-class performance without adversely impacting other key security and routing functions on the Contivity platform, a problem that crops up with other SSL add-ons.
The module provides multiple authentication options, including support for common authentication mechanisms such as LDAP, RADIUS, and Active Directory services. It can also support the use of digital certificates and token-based systems.
The product boasts an innovative feature called the Universal Access Portal, which transparently invokes the most appropriate VPN access method (SSL or IPsec) based on the user's situation or device type and the corporate resources being accessed. Authenticated SSL users can seamlessly transition to an IPsec connection without the need to re-authenticate or manually initiate the VPN client application.
At $8,000 for 50 SSL VPN licenses, our judges found the Module 1000 to be a good investment, especially for an enterprise already using a Nortel VPN.
