We asked our site experts to give us their industry predictions for the New Year. Here's what our training and certification expert Ed Tittel had to say:
Ed Tittel

1. Trouble and turmoil continues on the IPv6 front, but we finally see some glimmerings of consensus on address spaces, network design, and more deployments of IPv6 networks.

2. A smarter, friendlier, more secure generation of firewalls, routers, and switches will begin to emerge, led by new products from Cisco, Check Point, Juniper, and other key industry players.

3. Excess bandwidth and infrastructure capacity will continue to hold down the costs of Internet access, and the ongoing market shake-up, consolidations, and bankruptcies will alas continue until at least mid-year.

4. Managed network service providers will continue to make inroads in the services sector, with more and more companies -- both large and small -- turning network management (especially public links and publicly accessible resources) over to third parties.

5. Until the economy begins picking back up and job prospects improve, interest in plain vanilla network administrator certifications will continue to decline.
