For smaller WLAN deployments -- meaning one or two access points in a branch office, or less than 10 APs in a central location -- Sam Lucero, research analyst with Scottsdale, Ariz.-based In-Stat/MDR, said traditional "intelligent" APs are perfectly adequate and even more cost-effective than shifting to a full WLAN switching model.

But, he said for extensive WLAN deployments, IT managers should seriously look at the newer WLAN technology from various vendors as a means of making WLANs easier to deploy, secure and manage.

Michael Disabato, Midvale, Utah-based Burton Group's service director, suggests focusing on the site survey, as well as RF management, and making sure 802.11i is working -- as he considers those the most complex components of WLAN platform implementation.
