Cisco Systems Inc. made another step into the carrier market yesterday by acquiring Dynamicsoft Inc., a Parsippany, N.J.-based company that provides carriers with presence-based services using the emerging session initiation protocol (SIP).

Cisco will pay $55 million in cash for Dynamicsoft.

According to Cisco, Dynamicsoft's technology will allow it to help carriers to provide presence-based applications such as instant messaging, video conferencing and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) to subscribers across a number of devices and networks.

Users could, for example, maintain their online presence while a device transfers them from a cell network to a Wi-Fi network, said Mark Bakies, director of marketing for Cisco's voice technology group. SIP will also be used for application such as video conferencing, he added.

Cisco plans to integrate Dynamicsoft's SIP-based technology into its line of carrier soft switches, said Don Proctor, vice president and general manger of Cisco's voice technology group.

SIP is an emerging standard that is being used across applications as diverse as VoIP, video conferencing and instant messaging.

"This is a continuation of the strategy we started 24 months ago," said Proctor of Cisco's decision to acquire a company that is developing SIP-based technology.
