2002 predictions from expert Anthony Cicero

We asked our site experts to give us their industry predictions for the New Year. Here's what Anthony Cicero had to say about the future of network infrastructure.

I predict that over the course of the next year, most data communications customers will slowly migrate from CAT 5e cabling to CAT 6. Many companies will also find it more cost effective to bypass the CAT 7 wave and go directly from CAT 6 to fiber. Once bandwidth needs surpass the capabilities of CAT 6, fiber is the next logical step.

I also foresee that users will begin incorporating dark fiber-to-the-desk (FTTD) into their cabling systems for future usage, giving them the option to deploy extremely high bandwidth applications such as video streaming and online multimedia presentations.
