The company introduced this week the 7750 SR-e, which sits between the larger 7750 SR and the smaller 7750 SR-a systems. The latest product is designed to help organizations deal with the bandwidth demand of cloud-based operations, the Internet of Things (IoT) and ultra-high definition video (UHDV).
Service providers are spreading IP routers across the network edge to improve traffic flows. Using a distributed architecture means routers in smaller locations will handle more of the service chores within a large-scale IP network, reducing the chances of creating a bottleneck if only a few large centralized sites are used.
The 7750 SR-e is designed to offload tasks from larger routers in those central aggregation sites. The IP edge router is powered by the same Service Router Operating System found in the rest of the 7750 SR line and in Alcatel's virtualized router portfolio. The SR line uses Alcatel-Lucent's FP3 network processor.
Alcatel sells the 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM) for managing and provisioning physical and virtual routers. Integrated within the 5620 SAM is the 5650 Control Plane Assurance Manager, which provides visibility across an IP/MPLS routing plane.
Specs for the 7750 SR-e
The 7750 SR-e line includes the SR-1e, SR-2e and SR3e, which have a throughput of 400 Gbps, 800 Gbps and 1.2 Tbps, respectively. The routers support 1 GbE, 10 GbE and 100 GbE interfaces. The SR-e chassis design is compliant with Network Equipment Building System (NEBS) standards, which outline safety requirements for telecommunications hardware.
The SR line supports Alcatel-Lucent's 1830 Photonic Service Switch and its software-defined networking (SDN) technology, called Network Services Platform.
Revenue in the worldwide enterprise and service provider router market rose by 11.5% year over year in the second quarter, according to IDC. The market is on a rebound following recent quarterly declines.
