Look for 10 Gigabit Ethernet to make its move in 2006

2006 should be a busy and interesting year for networking trends and innovations.

2006 may be the year we see more widespread use of 10 Gigabit Ethernet, though we probably won't yet see PC motherboards integrated with 10-Gigabit-capable chipsets.

In the same vein, we should start also seeing progress toward more widespread adoption of Category 7 wiring to help transport data at such speeds (currently only workable with fiber optic cable, or various semi-proprietary implementations). Broadband wireless is already exploding so it doesn't take a genius to see more developments, more coverage and more speed in this area for 2006.

Wireless networking should also take a massive leap forward, as new security (WPA2, better VPN solutions, improved support for MAC address checking in most access points) and wireless antenna innovations help wireless networks reach farther, go faster and work more safely than ever before.
