- The Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) is an international standard that defines the ways in which control information is transferred among intelligent devices and systems such as computers and robots. The MMS is vendor-neutral and operates independently of the application function being performed. It is formally categorized by the International Standards Organization (ISO) as a part of ISO 9506.
The MMS originated in the 1990s as a paradigm for the optimization of automated manufacturing and industrial processes. It has been revised since then to encompass communication among programmable devices and systems of all kinds. The protocol also specifies how various devices should operate when specific messages are received.
