QUESTION POSED ON: 19 July 2004
I have finished my B.S. in computer system maintenance & networking, but I have no practical experience. I am working as an assistant network engineer for a small company. Which networking courses, such as MCSE, CCNA, etc., are best for me to learn the basics?

EXPERT RESPONSE
Both the courses you mention will give you a basic understanding of networking, but MCSE is more from server side and CCNA is more from WAN/LAN side. So it's up to you to decide what your area of interest is and where your passion lies. With MCSE you will be prepared for a job like systems administrator and with CCNA you will be prepared to become a network administrator. Moreover, you can talk to some of the career counselors at a training institute to get their views. My suggestion is to select one course of your liking, go through it religiously, but do not end your learning with the course. Learning should be a perpetual process and the more you learn the more you will feel like learning.
