QUESTION POSED ON: 15 June 2004
I have a dynamic public IP and have a ftp server inside my LAN, the major annoyance comes when my IP changes quite frequently might I add, and I have no way of getting my new IP from the net. Is there a way I can relay my changing IP to my Web site so I can view it from there? Or is there any other way of me getting that IP when I am from away from my LAN?

Your best solution would be to get a static IP address from your provider. They charge a little extra, but it is worth it not to have the headaches. The other thing you can do when you are out of the LAN is to do a tracert to the address of you FTP server. (from a command type tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx). This will not work if you have a private address on your machine, however. You can also ask your provider to grant you a longer lease on the number. The only other option would be to put a modem on your ftp server so that you can dial in and look at the address.
