QUESTION POSED ON: 12 May 2004
I have several customers that are looking at VoIP telephone systems, my question to you is: What kinds of analysis or testing do we have to do on an already installed cabling system supposed to be Cat 5e that was installed by some other contractor before we got there? What type of cabling system would you recommend to support a full blown VoIP system?

EXPERT RESPONSE
As you may or may not know, every VoIP equipment provider recommends that you check your infrastructure and network health prior to implementation. This should include a combination of upper layer monitoring and a physical layer audit to assure that all cabling is run to spec and actually tests to specifications. It is estimated that 50% of all category 5e cabling does not perform to category 5e specifications. Any network errors should be corrected prior to adding VoIP to your network. This single step can save a significant amount of time and money.
