What is the best technology to use to send voice over WAN?

>
This is rather a general question. It depends on a lot of factors. For instance:
  • What is your circuit capacity?
  • How many users do you plan to support?
  • What equipment do you already have?
  • Are the circuits private or virtual private circuits?
  • Are they frame relay or dedicated?

Many companies ditch their entire voice infrastructure just to implement VoIP and this may not be the best avenue. There are quite a few switch vendors out there that offer add-on VoIP gateways. Also, you will want to make sure that ALL of your network is operating at peak performance before adding a new technology. This should include things like removing any unnecessary protocols, checking your physical infrastructure (cabling and electronics). Find out what your electronics support in the way of Quality of Service, etc.

I wish I could tell you more, but there is not a cut and dry statement. I would be very cautious of any vendor that unequivocally states they have the one answer for everyone. It just doesn't work that way. There can be hidden costs to any solution. Proper planning and evaluation of all solutions will provide you with the best answers.
