QUESTION POSED ON: 18 December 2003
I am a second year student in electronic engineering. I would appreciate if you could give me a hand with the following design. "A coaxial cable consists of a flexible inner copper (cu) conductor of diameter not less than 1.5mm in diameter and an outer concentric flexible cu sheath of thickness 0.3mm. There is a concentric polymer insulating material separating the two and a thinner outer plastic covering insulator of 0.6mm thickness, encasing the whole cable. The cable must not be rigid and it must have a capacitance of less than (70pFm^ -1) its overall diameter must be less than 4.5mm. Create a design for the cable residing on the dimensions of the various parts of the cable, and the relative permittivity of a suitable insulator. Produce scale drawings of cross sections across an end and along its length. Discuss any limitations that your design might have on the performance of the cable. Develop a design spreadsheet that automatically outputs dimensions.

I would appreciate it if you could give me just a bit help! I'm finding it difficult to make the calculations!

I would suggest www.tiaonline.org and http://www.iso.org/iso/en/ISOOnline.frontpage for assistance. There is also some information on IEEE's Web site at www.ieee.org that may help.
