What are the benefits of using a VoIP wireless over DECT wireless systems?
I am currently designing a new network. I have already installed several networks with wireless systems but I have now been allowed to install a VoIP system. Due to the current hardware in place Cisco 3550 POE switches I am looking into the Cisco call manager and Cisco Phones with Spectralink phone system and Intermec Access points. The reason I have gone for the Intermec Access points is that the will do both Voice and Data over the same unit with VoIP over 1 radio and Data over the second radio. I have not gone with the Cisco Wireless phones is because they are to expensive and they don't have a rugged version.
A Nortel sales manager came by the company and said they could do it with DECT phones and it would be better than VoIP. But I don't know much about DECT so I am looking for some help with this.

Sounds like you are getting some new toys! DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) is digital wireless service. It operates in a different frequency band than Wireless Access Points. It is much like the digital cordless phone you have at home. The voice is not packetized like it would be for VoIP (it is not sampled and placed in a IP packet). Access Points provide for shared bandwidth. If the access point is capable of 54Mbps, actual throughput will be around 40-70% of that depending on building conditions, placement of access points, etc. You could actually over-saturate your access points and the voice calls would be inaudible. Even though the radio separates the data and voice, if they are communicating through the same physical cable, you will still want to be sure that the radio and the equipment on the cables side of the network can understand prioritization so that the voice will always be at a higher priority than the data.
