QUESTION POSED ON: 22 July 2003
I'm trying to set up a VPN using ms 2000 advanced server. There are two network cards - one for the external IP which clients will be able to see and an internal card. I have a line in the external that goes directly to the outside world and the internal is plugged into a hub for the internal network. Now I make a connection using the Connection Manager Administration Kit wizard and supply it with the external IP address that the server is using. This is a self-installing .exe file that I can distribute to clients. I'm trying to connect using a PPTP protocol because it's the easiest. Now I put the .exe file on my computer at home with Win XP and for some reason when I dial up through my ISP and then try to create a tunnel a connection is never made. I can ping the server in the win prompt and I get replies. I can swear that the server is set up correctly but obviously its not working. The one thing that I can think of is that our DNS for the internal site is off a Linux server. Any suggestions?

EXPERT RESPONSE
It is unlikely that the DNS server is a problem, as you say that you are providing the external IP address directly to the client program. I would guess that your server is not fully operational. You can check this by putting a hub on the external port and connecting your PC directly (not through the Internet) to the hub, and attempting to start the VPN. If it works locally, but not through the net, you may need to check with your ISP to ensure that VPN traffic is not being blocked outside of your location.
