Does MPLS provide better VPN services than others? What is the future of MPLS VPNs?

MPLS implements VPNs by controlling the routing of packets in the network. Privacy is provided by ensuring that packets only go where they are supposed to -- encryption may not be required. Because the routing is controlled end-to-end, service providers can provide service level guarantees. In these regards, MPLS is closer to ATM or frame-relay than to public Internet VPN technologies. The future of MPLS is far from certain, but it does seem to be gaining some traction in the marketplace.
