EXPERT RESPONSE
In order to remain competitive in today's marketplace companies need to adapt to changes in both culture and technology.
Cultural changes include the ever-increasing move to a mobile/ home-based workforce, which more and more companies facilitate through the purchase of laptops. This 'distributed' workforce brings a whole myriad of problems that don't exist when all of the machines are located within an office.
On the technology front the world is becoming a smaller place as more and more of us connect to the Internet to take advantage of technologies such as webcams and Internet Protocol (IP) telephony. This 'highly-connected' environment also brings with it new challenges and opportunities such as how to protect the company from hackers, viruses and malicious attacks which wouldn't be present in a 'non-connected' environment. This technology all costs serious money so there's also the added headache of keeping track of who has what and what are they using it for.
These cultural and technological changes also go hand in hand with a continued emphasis on reducing costs wherever possible.
