In determining the link speed there is a general rule that many of us use: Take the speed given to you by the sales or marketing department and divide it by two. Let's take 802.11b for example - The maximum connection rate is 11 Mbps, however some people say its only 5-8, which answer should be believe? Both. The total throughput including frame headers, preambles, frame check sums, synchronization bits, etc. is 11 Mbps however the effective data throughput is somewhere between 5-8 Mbps depending on your environment. The general same rule can be applied for 802.11a and 802.11g.
