I would be remiss if I didn't ask you why you want to make a major change to your server operating system. Are there features or functionality that you require that necessitates an upgrade? If so, the steps are below. If not, you might be better served by staying at 2003 for a little while longer.

It really depends on the role of the server as to which nstep-by-step instructions you require. I was able to find several TechNet articles on Microsoft's website that illustrate the benefits of the upgrade and help ensure you have the appropriate prerequisites installed before you upgrade. Good luck and enjoy the Microsoft experience!

Here's a step-by-step guide to upgrading to Windows 2008 for Windows 2003 Domain Controller.

I've also included a small list of the benefits of Windows Server 2008 that you might really appreciate:

  • Built-in Virtualization is great for simulating multiple application servers on a single server.
  • Read-only Domain Controllers are great for branch offices and distributed sites.
  • The new and improved TCP/IP stack is great if you're as nerdy as I am. Embrace the inner geek!
