QUESTION POSED ON: 01 October 2007 I need to ask about the difference between a managed and unmanaged switch. Do managed switches pose any overhead that decrease performance or network speed?
>
EXPERT RESPONSE
Managed switches are SNMP compatible, and they can be controlled and monitored via SNMP from a central network operations center (NOC) or a remote location whereas unmanaged switches can not be. Although SNMP traffic has an overhead and adds on to your network traffic, its footprint is very small and does not pose any potential threat to bandwidth choke or network performance.
Hope this helps.
