QUESTION POSED ON: 20 September 2007

Hi Craig,

I would like to know if there is any documentation for the proactive and reactive checklists for Cisco routers.

Regards,

EXPERT RESPONSE

Hi KVKrishna,

Sounds like you are interested in managing your Cisco routers from the perspective of network security policy. Cisco has a good deal of information and has collected guidelines and references about network security.

The National Institute on Standards and Technology (NIST) has a set of guidelines for firewalls. There are many network devices that combine routing and firewall technology. Here is a link to the NIST Guidelines on Firewalls and Firewall Policy.

Another resource is the Center for Internet Security. Among a considerable list of tools available is CIS Level 1 & 2 Benchmarks and Audit Tool for Cisco IOS Routers and PIX firewalls. This may offer the specific focus you are looking for in your question. Start at the Center for Internet Security home page.

If you and your organization take a policy-driven approach to network security policy, you will have laid a foundation that can withstand the arrival of a threat that has not yet been discovered.

For a custom network security policy checklist, view this tip from author Chris Cox.
