QUESTION POSED ON: 17 January 2007
After IPv4 was IPv6 -- why wasn't there ever a v5?

>
EXPERT RESPONSE
There actually was a v5. It was assigned to an experimental protocol which never came to life. Therefore the number was used and the number 6 was assigned to the next generation IP, which in the early days was called IPng.

Cheers,
Silvia
