QUESTION POSED ON: 04 January 2007
How can I tell where inbound traffic is coming from and where outbound traffic is going to from our LAN? This would help us diagnose phantom traffic which bogs down our network frequently. I'd like a way to graph the traffic by IP address, bandwidth used, and time of day.

EXPERT RESPONSE
The easiest way to accomplish this is to use a router (with surplus CPU capacity) to export netflow/IPFIX records to an offline profiling tool like NetQoS, Network Physics, and similar products. You can then slice and dice your data by source/dest/application/time of day etc.
