QUESTION POSED ON: 20 September 2006

How can we solve a problem of Wi-Fi signal-hopping in our office and hotspot environment? We have 4 x 802.11a/g Wi-Fi Linksys hotspots, but we lose connectivity when moving between hotspots within the office.

EXPERT RESPONSE

The problem you have sounds like one of two things -- either, multipath interference or dead spots. If you draw a circle on a layout of your office, you can not always count on signal coverage. It could bounce off people, desks, furniture and other signals (all called multipath).

You may have to adjust the placement of your access points. Also, make sure that the points support handoff from one to the other which is not always the case.

In the case of dead spots -- you may just not have enough signal in that area. In that case, you may have to add more antennas -- but again, make sure that they support handoff from one point to another. Also, check your channels and any channel restrictions that you have set.
