QUESTION POSED ON: 04 May 2004
I am using HP Procurves on are network, we are using a 8308xl as our main switch. How does my 8308xl need to be configured in order to place phones on a different VLAN when they boot up? We have a Linux DHCP server supplying address to the phones.

EXPERT RESPONSE
Some suppliers that make both the IP phone and the switch have a proprietary means of setting this up between the two. I am not familiar with that specific Procurve model but with any switch that is VLAN aware you should be able to configure it to support IEEE 802.1Q tagging. You will have to set up the VLAN membership on the switch and then do the same on the IP phones. The IP phones will tag all of the Ethernet frames with the VLAN ID and the switch will properly recognize these.
