If you want to deter hackers you will need to perform a security assessment. This assessments goal is to look at the overall security of your network. You may want to look at http://csrc.nist.gov/publications/ this document, (NIST 800-42) lists tools you can use for self assessment and penetration testing.

Penetration testing will examine how hard it would be for someone to break into your network. A report issued after the assessment should be used to fix the problems that were found.
