What certifications would be the first step towards gaining knowledge in windows networking?

I'd recommend digging into to something like the CompTIA Networking+ or the MCSA as good places to start down the path toward acquiring Windows networking skills and wisdom. If you have little or no networking background you'll want to start with the former and advance to the latter; if you do have some basic networking background, you can skip the former and go straight to the latter.
