Wow that's a really good question and one that will be hard to answer in this venue. My short answer for this would be defense in depth. By this, I mean a layering of security controls. These must include both logical and physical controls. Example of physical controls include gate, fences, guards, locks, access control, etc. Logical controls include strong authentication, firewalls, zone controls, anti-virus, encryption, patch management, etc.
