What are the advantages to completing the illusive CCIE cert versus having multiple CCNP certs?
I currently possess a CCNP and will likely complete the CCIP sometime this year. I am then considering either moving into the voice over IP (CCVP) program or taking the bull by the horns and attempting the CCIE program. What are the advantages to completing the illusive CCIE cert versus having multiple CCNP certs?
That is definitely a great question. Having multiple professional certifications allows you to broaden your Cisco horizons by proving that you can administer and manage multiple technologies for all sizes of businesses including large enterprises. Perusing your CCVP will also give you a bleeding edge advantage since the crux of Cisco networks today could involve AAVID technologies such as Cisco's VoIP phones and Call Manager.
As you mentioned, the CCIE is quite illusive and obviously will require steadfast dedication and a good deal of time (not to mention funding). If you can swing it, I recommend that you go for your CCVP as a short term goal and then plan on preparing for the CCIE shortly after. You may find that several aspects of the CCVP will solidify your understanding on some CCIE concepts (such as QoS). Who knows ... you may like the CCVP so much that you may want to try for the CCIE Voice cert.
