Yes, this happens all the time - many are carried out everyday worldwide. These are carried over dedicated satellite capacity - the organization conducting the conference has reserved a fixed amount of bandwidth on the satellite. They are not conducted over a shared data network so the cost to conduct this conferencing over the dedicated satellite bandwidth is very expensive.
