Is it possible to connect one laptop to another with a cross-over cable via the Ether socket on each unit or will I need a straight-through cable, or even a junction box of some description?

Yes, you can connect directly using a cross-over cable between both Ethernet interfaces. You would use a straight RJ45 cable when connecting from a network interface card (NIC) to a switch or hub.
