Hardware/software access control

What is the best way to prevent wireless users accessing the wireless network without authority? Would you say by hardware control or by software control?

Is this a trick question? :) In this context, the solutions are fundamentally the same, with two notable exceptions. In high throughput environments, hardware will most definitely be required to handle larger traffic volumes and, in the case of security over the airlink, the encryption computations. Other than those cases, the features can just as easily be handled on a hopped-up PC. (Answered by Dave Juitt.)
