Difference between a gateway and a router

What's the difference between a gateway and a router? Do I need an Ethernet adsl modem with a gateway in order to access the Internet from my LAN network?

A gateway allows you to access another network. A router can function as a gateway but a gateway is not necessarily a router. If you are using ADSL for your ISP you will need an ADSL modem.
