Are so-called 'free' certifications for real?

I've heard of companies offering free certifications based on having a combination of certs such as A+ and Network+. Have you heard of this and, if you have, where can I find more information?

The only way in which I know this combination of credentials works to IT professionals' advantage is that the Microsoft MCSA accepts the combination of A+ and Network+ (and also A+ and Server+, or Security+ by itself, for that matter) in lieu of a single elective exam. For the MCSE, only the Security+ may take the place of an elective exam however. See this link for the details on those certs.
